Taste Istrian wine at a festival or winery
An excellent way to discover the quaint towns in Istria is to attend a local festival, join a wine walk, or tour a winery. There are countless festivities featuring Istrian wine and food. Visit the northeast part of the region and take a train to visit 3 wineries Novigrad-Cittanova Wine Trail | Calendar of events in Istria (istra.hr). In late summer, during the harvest, take part in the ritual and volunteer to pick grapes. On November 11 join locals of Svt. Martin to honor the patron saint of winemakers, Saint Martin. In May explore northern Istria at the Buje Wine and Walk event. And don’t miss the last Sunday in May, Open wine cellar day in Motovun, where the town is overflowing with wine.
Vinistria recognizes top Istrian wines
One of the best opportunities to try a variety of locally produced wines is at a Vinistra event. The 27th Vinistra festival was held in Poreč’s Peškera Bay on 18-20 June. Each year they bring together over 100 Istrian wine producers to promote, judge, and recognize their outstanding quality and production. Discover the award winning native varieties such as Malvasia, Teran, Pinot, Merlot, Moscato, and Moscato rose.
Bike through the vineyards of Istria
Late summer is an excellent time to plan a bike voyage through the vineyards of Istria. The grapes will be ready for harvest and the sun will be mild. Join the nearby winery bike ride on 23rd October in Svetvinčenat. The Istrian tourism board has mapped out trails for cars and bikes throughout the region with signs along the road.
